Volumetric Display 1

The start of a volumetric display.

Made in 2026

Backgroud

A volumetric display is a type of psuedo-hologram. To make it you spin a led pannel really fast, and rely on the persistence of vision to make it look like a 3d. I made a prototype using a 8x8 led matrix and a BLDC motor. My plan is to drive the matrix with the BLDC motor, and use a hall sensors(with a magnet ) to detect the speed and the position in rotation of the hologram.

Motors

Settling on the propper motors for this project was not easy. I had a generic dc hobbyist motor but I realized I need for this project high-torque not high-rpm. My brother used to be into drones, so he had extra A2212 motors. These are perfect and ultra high rpm. These motors however was a bit of the hastle. I had to buy an ESC for them and find a DC power supply that could provide the needed amps.

Display

The display is pretty crappy, and this is the part I will improve in the next stage. I used an 8x8 led matrix that only has one signal pin. A nano powered by a 9v battery powers everything. This display will not be able to spin yet though. The display is flexible, so I need to make a frame to hold everythign and ensure a stable center of balance.
